being short on cash doesn't mean we have to give up on fun. this very old xerox of an r. crumb illustration sits on an easel on top of the cable box at home. it reminds me of all the reasons i should stop watching tv but here are a few good reasons why i keep watching...
two tickets to see a movie at the theatre and the cost of parking (or the train) and popcorn can cost upwards of $30. plus, you have to leave the apartment. watching movies on cable is free or up to $6.99, depending on what you want to see. and that's $6.99 for everyone, not per person. add the fact that my husband makes the best popcorn and there's no comparison. we've seen
this and
this for free and
this for money. pretty good stuff.
renting films from the library is an excellent way to expand your viewing options. at ours foreign films are considered educational and therefore - free! we've seen
this and
this (and so much more) from the library stacks.
pbs. don't overlook this purveyor of good clean fun. some outstanding series like
wide angle,
american masters and
pov have opened up new worlds to me and they're commercial-free. flipping thru our five pbs channels i have often stumbled upon something so inspiring i want to tell everyone i know to see it. then i want to watch it over and over myself.
this is one of those finds. so so good. see it.
if you don't mind cuddling up in front of the computer screen, try
hulu. you have to hunt around for the good stuff, but it's in there. including the entire series of
art in the 21st century. and i saw
this sweet little indie film, too. all for free.
if we turn down the lights and have a big bowl of hot popcorn in front of us, we can even manage to make our favorite tv shows feel like a date. after mourning the loss of
dr. paul weston and
precious ramotswe when we lost our premium cable channels in the spring, we fell into the worlds of
don draper and
tommy gavin. i guess we're fickle, but this is really good stuff. best of all, we can watch them on demand and skip the commercials.
so heat up the popcorn pan and grab the remote (we'll be watching
this)- it's a great cheap date!
I was talking to a friend yesterday who is the single mom of an almost 13yr old. He was at the new Harry Potter flick, and it was a BIG deal to him since they don't go to movies nor have cable. The tv is almost never on except for rental flicks.
Yes, it might amaze others, but they're happy and relatively well adjusted. ;-)
I'm thinking about popcorn Right Now.
