this shot is from the stack of slides we found in his storage locker.  i'm drawn to this one.  i want to know where they are.  have they stopped on their way somewhere or is this the destination?  it's autumn and the trees are showing great color, yet the photographer has given the dying grass the main focus.  and would this be nearly as interesting if the shadow weren't in the corner?  i think i like it so much because it looks like a shot i would take.  i can relate.

see the final page of jessie's found photo album here.  such lovely seascapes.  farewell jessie!  thanks for turning the pages kirsty.

Portrait:wavy hair man

another portrait from my early collection.  there is something about that face.  that steady gaze, that self assurance, the ease and confidence.  he's direct and authoritative.  he's everything i am not.  i wonder what he did for a living.  he could have been a banker... or a gangster.  i wonder how his life turned out?

Portrait:older woman in glasses

there has to be a story in this one.  i want to know her name and her story.  i think it would please her to tell someone.  she might be surprised that you are curious about her, maybe she wouldn't believe you at first.  she'd serve you iced tea or lemonade and cookies on a tray.  and then, if you asked again in just the right words... she would tell you.  slowly.  how it all happened, when there was joy and then how the sorrows came.  you want to sit very still and listen, rapt.  it would be the best story you have heard in a long time.

what do you think her name and story might be?

lucky me!  i was invited to spend a few quiet days at the beach with a friend who has a cottage there.  a photo safari to the antique shops, walks along a deserted beach, good eats, long conversations and a few vodka dreamcicles were enjoyed.  now i am struggling to get re-acclimated to real life.  i keep forgetting what day it is...

Found:woman portrait2

from the same found photo stash i rediscovered last week, probably from the same photo studio.  there is a sweet innocence in this young woman's portrait.  i love her crooked smile and the way she looks off camera, distracted from the photographer's lens.  was she far from home and sending back her likeness as a remembrance to her family?  i see fresh youthful hope in this face.  and a little hesitant uncertainty...
what do you see?

Found photo:old man profile

while spending days searching for old negatives this week (still missing one set), i came across a faded envelope of what may be the very first found photos i collected.  formal portraits printed on thick wavy papers, they carry no identifying marks or dates and still show the indents of the photographer's clamps where they were hung to dry in a long lost darkroom.

this portrait reminded me of my paternal grandfather when i saw it and i know that is why i saved it.  there is a perception of pain and suffering in this face, a life of struggle and sadness and loss.  at least that is what i see...

what do you see?

(still trying to work out the new system on the typepad compose page... grrrrrrrrr)
